Wooden church in Dębno
A monument listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It is not only the age and wooden construction that attest to its uniqueness. The temple was built entirely from larch logs, without the use of nails – only using wooden joints and pegs. The whole structure is set on oak foundations.
But the greatest treasures lie inside. The Church in Dębno has a unique polychrome from around 1500 – full of symbolism, colors, and details. The paintings are not just decoration – they tell a story of faith, fears, and hopes of people who lived 500 years ago.
The walls and ceiling are covered with colorful decoration – made on raw wood using tempera technique. It is the oldest preserved painting of this type in Europe. Here you will find, among others, plant, animal, geometric, and symbolic motifs. Every element is a story – often surprisingly contemporary.
The Church in Dębno survived floods, wars, and revolutions – and yet its interior has remained almost in the original condition.
